The brief
Each pillar had to water itself reliably on a city street, keep going through network outages, and report back so the estate could be managed remotely instead of by site visit. Working with Canary Wharf's landscape team, we moved the fleet onto an updated LTE-M system with tank monitoring and advanced scheduling.
What we built
- Custom controller hardware on a Nordic nRF9160 cellular MCU, with solar and battery hybrid power management.
- Embedded firmware that runs watering schedules autonomously, even offline, with secure boot and signed OTA updates.
- A sensor suite for soil moisture, temperature, tank level and flow, with pump and solenoid control.
- A Rust cloud API and a React dashboard where estate management and landscapers can control and monitor each installation on a live map, plus a mobile app for on-site engineers.
In production
Hundreds of units in the field, including the Canary Wharf estate, managed remotely with OTA and diagnostics that replace routine site visits. A next-generation controller platform is now in development on the same lineage.
